Short Commentaries by Al on the Book of Leviticus

Leviticus 26:31 - “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.”

Sometimes Christians, especially those young in the faith, encounter what seems to prove that consulting “the stars” or “the fates” has some validity to it. Fortune-tellers using the crystal-ball, tarot cards, tea leaves, palm reading or some other means seem to be so precise in their predictions that they can’t be ignored. Famous people seem to be successful because they follow such predictions, so the fortune-telling system seems to be validated. Can it really be so wrong when it seems so right? Many good things are restricted: women may have authority, but not over men in the home or the church; the Lord’s supper may be eaten, but not on a day other than Sunday; musical instruments may accompany singing, but not in spiritual songs that praise God. It should not seem strange that God has forbidden our consulting those who seem to have a power beyond His word. They don’t. It is as with many things - and as Lucy told Charlie Brown: “You’re not right; you only sound right.” Don’t be tempted. If you yield to it, you will be defiled.
