Short Commentaries by Al on the Book of Colossians

Colossians 2:6-7 - “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

The writers of the New Testament by inspiration of God consistently admonished Christians to believe, preach and practice only the doctrine of Jesus. Today the world is bombarded with conflicting doctrines from man-made faiths claiming to be from the Lord, but none of these so-called denominations existed when Paul wrote to the church in Colossae. The world of those saints, however, did have its own multiplicity of philosophies and religions. Regardless how firmly man’s wisdom is taught in universities, and reflected in culture, none but the doctrine of Christ will lead a person to the success for which he was born. In the faith of Christ one is “rooted” (rendered firm, fixed, established, thoroughly grounded). Only in keeping the word of Jesus is one “built up” (increased in knowledge of truth and in a life conformed thereto). In no other way but following the Bible as his guide in all things can anyone be “stablished in the faith” (made firm, established, confirmed, made sure). Popular practices may feel good - popular doctrines my sound right - but only what is written in the Bible is truth. Only the New Covenant of Jesus Christ will be recognized by the Judge of souls at the end of the way. Is your faith that one which is received from Jesus Christ the Lord?
