Short Commentaries by Al on the Book of MalachiReturn to the Index of Short Commentaries |
Malachi 4:4 - “Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.” If the Book of Malachi was the last word from the Lord before the events regarding the birth of John the baptizer, as is and has been commonly believed, then God spoke only one more sentence after the above before sending the Messenger and the Messiah into the world. Abraham had been called from Ur to Canaan. His great-grandchildren and their descendants were in Egypt for generations, wandered in the wilderness 40 years, given the land of promise and lived upon it for almost 1,000 years, were cast out of it for 70 years and just been settling back into it for less than 100 years. They had been cast out for failing to heed the word 900 years old, and were re-established in the land under the instruction of that same ancient word. It was to be a wait of about 400 years before the promise of the ages was to be fulfilled in their own land, and God’s instruction to them was, “Remember ye the law of Moses.” In their long history many changes had occurred. They had lived under several political systems, and the world around them would change drastically yet three more times in the coming years, but in spite of all, God said, “Remember ye the law.” Now to us He has given the law of Christ instead of the law of Moses, and His plea is the same: “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). Politics, technology, moral standards and society’s attitudes may change, but God’s unchanging word will change every soul. Know it. Live it. |
