Short Commentaries by Al on the Book of LamentationsReturn to the Index of Short Commentaries |
Lamentations 2:14 - “Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.” Israel was removed from her place with God because they had listened to - had even sought for themselves - preachers who preached vanity and foolishness. Those who should have preached God’s word preached false messages. (The “burden” of the prophets was the message that they preached. To “discover” is to “uncover”, lay open; it’s what Nathan for David when he said, “Thou art the man” - II Samuel 12:7.) A visitor told me Sunday that where she has lived the preacher “won’t preach on marriage and immorality.” Because preachers have declared the sin in the world it has come into the church. Because they have not declared the sin in the church, it has multiplied - and the church has suffered and will suffer. There are other factors, but preachers are assigned by God to this responsibility (II Timothy 4:1-5). And every Christian is to accept nothing else (Galatians 1:6-10; 3:1). |
