Short Commentaries by Al on the Book of Genesis

Genesis 1:1 - “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

What Do You Mean “God”? In recent years men have talked much about the“identity” of God. Some, to draw lines of faith or merely to defend personal beliefs, have militantly argued for “the one God of the Bible” (and still don’t agree on who He is). Others more demonstrably contend for a different “one and only God.” Still others, in an air of “toleration,” have allowed different views of God for different people. “In the beginning God created” (Genesis 1:1), but who created? Was it Allah? Buddha? Jesus? Does it seem reasonable to you that the book with such a beginning statement just might describe “God” somewhere in its pages? It does. Among other qualities too numerous to list here He is eternal (Deuteronomy 33:27), righteous (Psalm 7:9), loving (John 3:16) and merciful (Exodus 34:6-7), but a just and perfect judge (Deuteronomy 32:4). He is all-powerful (Genesis 17:1), all-seeing (Jeremiah 1:4), and everywhere present (Acts 17:24-27). He calls Himself simply “I AM” (Exodus 3:13-14). He is the author of (only) the Bible, and has preserved it in the world for these thousands of years. Confusion results from the theories among men that “absolute truth does not exist,” and that “the Bible is open to various interpretations.” Neither is true, for “God has spoken” (Hebrews 1:1-2). Let’s accept God’s own description of His identity, get back to His Book, and live accordingly.

Genesis 2:18 - “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

As I watch movies on TV, I occasionally like to do an internet search of the actors, directors and other professionals to learn more about their backgrounds and their other works. That searching has provided an education beyond biographies. It seems that those who write such records think it necessary to report that “Tom and his partner, George” live here, or went there. Never have I read that “Bill and his wife, Sue” bought a house or did a good deed. It seems that, with some, the practice of homosexuality is a thing of honor to be recognized and praised. Beyond that, it is apparent that those who think so are determined to have everyone else think so, too. They are bent upon bending society toward their own perversions. Merriam-Webster’s first definition of “perverse” is “turned away from what is right or good: corrupt.” The “help” that was “meet” (suitable) for man in the eyes of his Creator was not found among the animals, nor was it another man, but the woman (vv. 19-24). She was specifically created to rectify that which was “not good” in the man. Those who turn from the “natural use” (Romans 1:26) of anything are practicing perversion. Those who protect and defend the perversion are as guilty as those who practice it (Rom. 1:32). Societal popularity does not determine right and wrong in the final judgment.

Genesis 19:24-25 - “Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.”

“There are some who think only of wars, killing and destruction when they think of God, missing entirely His love, mercy, grace and salvation. Others don’t believe that a God of love can be a God of wrath. Paul wrote that the Old Testament was written for our learning (Romans 15:4) and our admonition (I Corinthians 10:11). In the beginning (Genesis 2:24) God said that a man and his wife, not a man and his partner, should be “one flesh.” Whether that “partner” is male or female, it is a “family” arrangement condemned by God. “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4). Those who choose to follow God’s pattern have always been blessed; those who choose to reject God’s way are promised only punishment (Matthew 25:31-46). The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is a matter of historical record. It stands as a lesson for all time to people who will heed it: God loves you and wants to bless you, but He will send to an eternity of indescribable torment all who willingly violate His perfect law.
